Anxiety can impact anyone, but it is particularly prevalent in those of us who spend a lot of time ‘in our own heads’ or who could describe ourselves as ‘over thinkers’. If we stay in our thought loops, anxiety can be hard to shift because we become hard-wired with an anxiety response. Body processing can offer a route to lasting change.
The body can be seen as the super highway to the mind; not only does it reflect what is happening there, but there is two-way communication. If our physiological self is at ease, our mind will follow. Focusing on anxiety in its physical state opens an opportunity to process challenging feelings in a tangible way, and sends the signal back to our mind that we are not afraid.
Next time you feel you are falling into a thought spiral of anxiety, instead of running from the, often unpleasant, physical sensation it brings, try engaging with it. Start with a single deep breath right down until you feel your belly rise. Then consider where in your body you are ‘feeling’ anxious. Is it your chest, jaw line, palms, or legs? Scan your whole body searching for the physical sensation. Not only will it help you to identify future signs of anxiety, before it reaches a panic stricken crescendo, but actively taking your curiosity to it, sends a message to your fearful amygdala that there is nothing to fear.
Warm wishes as you embark on the journey to uncover your calmer mind!
