Getting an autism diagnosis is usually either a lengthy, or expensive, process and once you have those pieces of paper that confirm what you may have known for sometime, feelings can be complex. You may experience a wide range of emotions, all of which are valid and may change as you process what this diagnosis means for you
Relief: your experiences finally make sense
Validation: your challenges have been recognised
Hope/Empowerment: you now have a clearer path to gaining the supports you need
Grief/sadness: reflecting on past struggles or missed support
Anxiety: uncertainty about others’ responses or the future
Uncertainty: What does this mean for me?
All reactions can help you to shape a life that works for you!
Once the diagnosis is received, many people find it helpful to think about what comes next. These steps can support self-understanding, adjustment, and wellbeing
Processing the Diagnosis: Give yourself time to reflect and adjust. Explore your own narrative: how autism fits into your life story
Building Knowledge: Learn about autism. Connect with autistic voices and communities
Seeking Support: Consider therapeutic space to explore feelings and identity. Access workplace, educational, or daily living adjustments if needed
Moving Forward: Identify strengths and your preferred ways of living. Allow your needs and values to guide your direction
Living Well with Your Diagnosis
Your diagnosis is a starting point for deeper self-understanding. Therapy can help you recognise your needs and strengths, while providing a space to explore what you require in order to thrive. I have spaces available, in my online neuroaffirming practice, this autumn. Please get in touch, via my contact page, if you would like to book a free consultation, so you can see if I am the right therapist for you.
Open World Therapy wishes you well on your journey!
